In a meeting of the Board of Approval (BoA) under the Union Ministry of Commerce, 67 acres of land earmarked for the second phase of expansion of Infopark Kochireceived SEZ status. This makes it a total of 98 acres of SEZ-notified land–31 acres having received SEZ status in September 2010.
The SEZ status can be extended by acquiring the adjoining area and making fresh applications via usual procedures. A global tender had been floated to select master-plan consultants for the Phase II expansion.
The approval has cleared the way for Infopark to set up a sector- specific IT and IT-Enabled Services Special Economic Zone as part of its second phase of expansion. The ground-readying work for the project is already under way.
Kerala IT offers excellent infrastructure and connectivity, which is being capitalized on. The park will provide the first plug and play BPO facility in the State. It will house domestic parks as well as Special Economic Zones for IT/ITES, and is aimed at creating cost effective infrastructure for the BPO industry. It is envisaged as an IT township with shopping centers, educational institutions, and multiplexes.
