3D Modeling and Animation Workshop in Technopark

14th Sept, 2011 – International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) as part of the 10th anniversary of FOSS is organizing an introductory workshop on Blender – the world’s most popular Open Source application for 3D Modeling and Animation, from September 16-17 2011, at Technopark, Trivandrum at 10am. The two-day workshop is organized for students, teachers and professionals from the Animation industry. Mr. Milind Thaha, a Blender professional who is a student of Architecture at the MES College, Kuttippuram will facilitate the workshop.

The Blender Workshop is being inaugurated by Mr. Amarnath Raja (Chair, IEEE International Committee on Humanitarian Technologies), in a meeting presided over by Mr. Sasi P.M., (Associate Director, CDAC Thiruvananthapuram, and Member, Governing Body, ICFOSS)

Computer graphics has seen explosive growth in movies, entertainment, advertisement, education, architecture, industrial modeling and other realms in recent times and has resulted in heightened interest around the world in software that can be used for this purpose, both from an IT Industry as well as aspirants.

In the last decade, Blender has emerged as a FOSS-based contender to the traditional proprietary 3D modeling and animation software. The product of a European animation company later on turned over to the user community. Recent developments on Blender have been funded by an enthusiastic community of users and supporters. As a Free Software, Blender comes with no legal restrictions, and can be downloaded at no cost from its web site. The features, extensibility, online community support and low cost of Blender allow small and medium sized firms to enter the Animation Industry.

“For a country like India, modeling and animation can potentially provide a career for many thousands of young people, with right kind of training. IT companies–especially small and medium sized–are encouraged and enabled to take up such work. Cost of traditional modeling and animation software is a formidable entry barrier in this domain for the smaller enterprises. Most animation projects need teams of 20-30 people on an average, this means investing in as many copies of these expensive software, which can render the business unprofitable under Indian conditions.” Said ICFOSS Director, Satish Babu

ICFOSS intends to stimulate the creation a critical mass of Blender professionals in Kerala, and this introductory workshop is to expose interested students and professionals to the basics of the software. A more advanced workshop is being planned for November 2011 with actual users who are professionals from the film and animation industries.

“Use of Blender allows small groups of practitioners to work on projects from their homes in town and villages–which blends in well with the objectives of the Govt. of Kerala of taking IT to villages.” Satish Babu added.
