TechnoarkToday.com>> September 18, 2014: The food safety department has confirmed presence of the antibiotic, streptomycin, in chicken samples collected from a poultry farm near Parassala. Of the 10 samples collected from Palakkad and Trivandrum, only one sample had the presence of antibiotic. That sample was sent for further analysis to check whether the level antibiotic is harmful after cooked consumption.
The samples were tested in Vimta Labs in Hyderabad. Streptomycin is an antibiotic produced by the actinomycete Streptomyces griseus and used to treat tuberculosis.
Recently, Delhi based Center for Science and Environment has confirmed presence of antibiotics in 40% of chicken samples collected across the country. However, the presence of antibiotics in chicken in the state is being confirmed for the first time.
The presence of antibiotic in chicken will make humans resistant to antibiotics. It is also feared that antibiotic resistant bacteria will be transmitted from chicken to human.
The food safety department is expected to conduct raids in other parts of the state in the coming days.
