Diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar(glucose) in the blood. Glucose is the mail source of energy for the body and food we intake is the source for the same.
Insulin is a hormone produced by Pancreas, which acts a vital role to allow glucose to pass from blood stream into body cells as a part of providing energy. Diabetes develops when the pancreas is either unable to produce insulin or the insulin generated does not work effectively. Without proper functioning of Insulin, glucose builds up in the blood stream leading to high blood sugar levels.
Types of Diabetes :
Type 1 : Previously known as Insulin dependent or Juvenile diabetes, occurs when Pancreas is unable to produce Insulin. People with this type of diabetes require Insulin Injections for life, a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Type 2 : Formerly known as Non Insulin dependent diabetes, often responds to a healthy diet, regular exercise, weight reduction, sometimes tablets and later Insulin Injections. Body with this type of diabetes produce insufficient insulin or the insulin generated does not work effectively.
Common Symptoms :
-Excessive thirst
-Weight loss
-Tiredness
-Frequent urination
-Excess hunger
-Frequent mood changes
-Abdominal pain & oral or vaginal thrush
The risk for family members are listed below.
-Mother who has Type 1 diabetes : 1 – 2 % risk for child
-Father who has Type 1 diabetes : 4 – 6 % risk for child
It is to be noted not to delay the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, as it can be life threatening if left untreated.
