Reactions Of Recession

In the first week of November, Gireesh N, working for IBS Software System Pvt Ltd in Infopark, was given the pink slip by his HR manager. He was given only half an hour’s time to resign. “I was really shocked because it was only a few months ago that I was offered a pay hike by the management. In fact, I was about to join an IT firm outside Kerala which offered me a higher remuneration, than I get from IBS,” says Gireesh. To retain him the management offered him an increment. But unfortunately his association with the company did not last long.

Gireesh is not alone in his plight. The company terminated seven others from Infopark.

The global recession is hitting us hard with about 200 professionals working in IT and ITES companies in Infopark and Technopark losing their jobs and three companies in Infopark closing down.

But State Information Technology secretary Ajay Kumar says the sacking of employees has not come to the notice of the State Government. “The government has constituted a committee for taking appropriate action in such cases. If we get complaints the committee will inspect Infopark and take steps to check if the companies sacked employees without proper reason,” Ajay Kumar said.

Remya S, working with an IT firm in the Cochin Special Economic Zone, says, “Our company has not sacked anybody till date.

In fact we have been given a salary increment.” She is among the fortunate ones as many IT firms have cut down allowances of employees and that includes house rent, travelling and uniform allowances. “The management has hinted that they are also going to cut our salary,” said an IT professional working at the Infopark.

Mathew John who works with IBS in Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram, says that the company had plans to terminate 130 employees. “But after 27 employees were terminated, here, in Kochi, there was quite a reaction and they didn’t move ahead with the plan.

But our HR personnel have told us that they will soon terminate more employees,” he said. What irks them is that the sacking is not based on performance. “Even those who have bagged a good performance certificate from CEO V K Mathews of IBS are jobless now.

The worst thing is that they were given pink slips citing poor performance,” he says. But Mathew Joshua, head, corporate management, IBS, begs to differ. He said they had sacked only four IT professionals from the Infopark unit and that was owing to poor performance. “We have not cut down the allowance of our employees,” says Mathew.

The majority of companies, including Infosys, Wipro and L&T on the Infopark campus have terminated their employees very stealthily, sources say.

“The management asked us to clear all formalities within 10 to 15 minutes. There is nothing we could do,” said an IT professional working at Infopark on condition of anonymity.

Some say that sacking is not new in IT companies. “This happens every year.

About 500 professionals were sacked from various units in the country last year. This year too the same thing is happening. But due to recession this is getting a lot of attention,” said an IT professional working for TCS at Infopark.

But the techies are confident that they will soon land better jobs. “This is just a bad phase which will pass,” says Soumya B, another techie. And her opinion is backed by her friends and colleagues who are hopeful that things will change for the better.

  2. IT is no more a good choice for job hunters who is looking for a risk free career.

    It is a trend today, that every engineering and other people are coming in to the IT and industry is overcrowded. nobody is interested in any other jobs.

  3. Where else other than IT will Trivandrum’s youth go to? There are no other good job creators here. Atleast in Kochi, you have a whole lot of other corporate presence the likes of which is absent in Trivandrum.

There are more conventional industires requires lots of young people, civil, mechanical, teaching ( our educational system is so pathetic, no qualified teachers remains in colleges), Research, Medical and thousands of many other fields. everyone is in to the IT because of the paycheques and perks with very little effort to secure a job.

    The ill effect is, there will be no quality and security for the job.

IT jobs are very good compared to other jobs – high pay, global exposure, multi-national and multi-cultural work enviornment etc. Sinc it is a global industry and global benefits, it also has global terms when it comes to job security; when there is an ecnomic downturn, you will lose jobs, but you will get it when the industry becomes okay.

    Also please look at the dynamics; when companies decide to lay off, they will select the best and retain them and let go the relatively poor performers. Can they do it differently?

    Another question is this. Should companies lay off? If they don’t the company will have to close and everybody will lose jobs! They have to lay off to protect the company and the rest of the jobs.

    The probelm is that we are new to this concept. We thought it is only great pay and great job and no risks! It does not work like that, does it?

    The problem will go off in less than a year. The industry will come back to boom again. Things will become okay. Lets support the industry and companies, without which we have no jobs.

  6. That is a very good topic for a discussion. i do agree to the author. Indian Software Professionals are just the IT workers. we can’t call them as a programmer or software engineers. ( or a coder is a better name )

    The quality of Indian IT guys are getting worse day by day. It is a known fact and no institutions or companies are taking care about it.

    They are going to campuses and select all the batches during their visit. these fellows does not know how to write or speak in English, where the major part of clients are English speaking. ( don’t say about japan and china, they are industrial countries and self sufficient )

    So where the industry is going? 70% of the resumes and experiences are fake, and personally i felt it many times. i interviewed so many people who claims like they have very good knowledge in x,y or z technologies, and they know absolutely nothing about that. Resume contains many projects and they normally fill all the jargon’s. when you start asking questions they will show you their true color.

    IT needs to pose some serious steps to rectify such situation otherwise we will loose the advantages which we are having today.

    India has very good IT professionals, and also some bad ones. The sudden growth of the sector has led to shortfall of supply, and being still an economically backward country and lot of unemployed youth; lots of young people have approached the sector, though not fully trained and qualified. This has led to quality erosion, and to some extent, fraudulent behavior by candidates.

    Good companies have very good training programmers for staff development and the youngsters become competent professionals. In Kerala, IBS staff are considered to be the best trained (technically, domain-wise and personally) in the TTL domain, far better than multinationals, which have less focus on “offshore” staff development yet.

    Of course, performance is an issue for all companies, especially since less qualified joins the companies through fake claims and credentials. Infosys, TCS and Wipro are addressing poor performance by sending of 5% (they call CRR- Compulsory Relative Rating) of the low band employees (Involuntary Attrition).

    The real issue is the mindset of ourselves, which we should improve. We should pay attention to improving our own skills and developing competence and positive attitude, instead of complaining. We should help companies reduce costs and improve business. With 3 years experience, we are paid more than the Chief Secretary of a State, who is one of the very very few selected IAS officers in a year and has over 30 years experience! Do we deserve this? When the industry goes through a difficult period, should we show understanding, or go about spreading rumors? When the going was good, didn’t us walk out of companies and joined other companies, any time that we liked? Now, when the economy is bad and the industry is struggling, what are we doing?

    These are very very difficult times, but it will pass, and the industry will boom again. Lets work together to tide over the crisis in IT!
