Welcoming ‘Moods’ at Technopark
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Has the decision to set up a condom shop at Technopark put a bad impression on the country’s first IT park and the techies there?
The techies at Technopark have been seriously debating this ever since Express reported about the new venture by HLL Lifecare. If it all began with a serious debate in the websites, it eventually led to an online survey. The survey has, in fact, proved the fact there is a positive response from the techies to the HLL Lifecare initiative.
The online survey had asked two questions to the techies: (1) Will you promote starting a condom shop at Technopark? (2) Do you agree that starting a condom shop at Technopark will bring a bad impression?
When 75 percent of the techies were ready to promote a condom shop at Technopark, 66.7 percent believed that it would not put any bad impression on the Park.
Express had first reported about this new venture on January 9 and ever since it had become a topic of discussion among the techies in the online debate. If some were highly critical over the issue becoming a news for the media, some had taken it on a positive note.
“I think it is a good initiative. Starting such shop in Technopark is really a good decision. Out of the nearly-30,000 workforce, almost all of them are in their 20s and 30s.
So, there is a business potential as well as it would protect one from STD and related diseases. Ignorance is the risk here; as soon as they hear something like this the moral police will come forward and protest,’’ said one techie in the online debate.
Another techie is of the opinion that hesitating to accept such things is equivalent to illiteracy. ‘’Everything has a good side and a bad side. This is true in this case too. Easy availability of guns in the US makes its impulsive use very common and lots of gunshot injuries are reported. But access to guns has its advantages too. Likewise, while adding convenience, this might also promote in-house use of it a little more common than it currently is,’’ said another techie.
Some were highly critical. ‘’Just come out from the typical Mallu narrow-mindedness and selective ignorance about the things…What is wrong in setting up a condom shop in Technopark? Why people are ashamed of hearing it or seeing it?’’, asked one.
“Why making such a big hue and cry over such a thing which has become so common? It is similar to frowning at sanitary napkin ads on TV,’’ was the reaction from another techie.
However, some were much relieved to hear that news. ‘’At last that also happened. Well done guys, well done,’’ said one. But another was much curious about the logistics it would provide. ‘’No waste of time and petrol,’’ was how he reacted.
