TechnoparkToday.com(sept,2013)>> Lords Hospital, a multidisciplinary hospital here will organise a free heart care camp on the occasion of World Heart Day tomorrow (September 29). Dr KP Haridas, Chairman and Managing Director will inaugurate the camp to be held at the hospital premises, 8 am.
The theme of this year’s World Heart Day is prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with focus on women and children because healthy children lead to healthy adults, and healthy adults lead to healthy families and communities. In keeping with this theme, the heart care camp at Lords will share pointers for prevention and control of heart diseases among women and children.
Dr Haridas said, “We aim to 300 patients through this camp, on a first-come-first-served basis. Investigations that will help diagnose heart diseases including blood sampling to detect sugar and cholesterol levels, ECG and neurosensitivity test will be given free of cost to patients attending the camp.”
Dr V Jeyapal, Senior Cardiologist will lead the camp. “Heart disease is found to be prevalent in nearly 12.9% of urban population and in around 6-8% of Kerala’s rural population. CVD is also on the rise among youngsters in Kerala, young males are more prone to it. Smoking ranks high among the risk factors of cardio vascular diseases.”
Lords Hospital has an effectively functioning Heart Failure Clinic, a one-of-its-kind in South Kerala. “Analysis of records of patients at our clinic shows that a high 60-80% suffer from systolic heart failure, which is the failure of the heart to pump blood,” added Dr Jeyapal who also holds a Ph.D in Cardiology.
The World Heart Day was created in 2000 to build awareness on heart diseases and stroke that are the world’s leading causes of death. According to the World Heart Federation, these diseases claim 17.3 million lives across the globe each year. It is expected that by 2030, 23 million people will die from CVDs annually.
The camp at Lords will be on from 8 am to 1 pm.
