International Women’s Day – Why we should care about?

Tomorrow, communities around the globe will celebrate International Women’s Day for the hundredth time and I look forward to taking part in the celebrations. Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a big deal. Women in India have it pretty good nowadays don’t they? There’s no restriction on voting, education or employment. Top positions (Government, Politics, Corporates,Media) in India are held by woman. If only that were all there was to it!

As someone who has been involved in different movements, We have always had an understanding of the importance of International Women’s Day and the many programs, such as affirmative action and diversity programs, workplace flexibility and ensuring workplace is free of sexual harassment program, that the courts and Government has put in place to advance the position of women.

Our industry should be embarrassed and ashamed of the fact that women, who make up the majority of the workforce, still are not treated equal to their male colleagues.

It is fantastic to celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day and it is right to recognise women who have made, and those who continue to make, enormous contributions to our industry and union.

But we think the best thing that we can do as we reflect on the fact that we have been celebrating International Women’s Day for a hundred years is to look forward and ask ourselves what contribution we will each make in the next twelve months to ensure that our industry genuinely tackles the growing gender gap.

we hope that we can all look back in a few years and say that should our daughters, sisters, wife or mothers choose careers in IT/ITES they will do so knowing that they will receive the same opportunities and rewards as their male counterparts.

Happy International Women’s Day.

  1. Gender Bind / Unfair Share

In Times of India [ March 08,2011 ], Ms. Rema Nagarajan provides following insights :

 Women own 1 per cent of the world’s wealth, have a 10 per cent share in global income

 Women comprise half the world’s population but occupy just 14 per cent of leadership positions in the private and public sector

 Of the 1.4 billion people living on less than $ 1 a day, 70 per cent are women and girls

 Women do two-thirds of the world’s work, but earn only 10 percent of the income

 Women produce half of the world’s food, but own just 1 per cent of its land

 Of the almost 900 million adults worldwide who can’t read or write, two-thirds are women

Will mankind [ on “ Women’s Day “ 2011, should I say, womankind ? ] manage to bridge this gender gap by end of 21st Century ?

    With regards
