IT Companies recruiting non-engineers?

In what is definitely very good news for many, IT companies like TCS, Cognizant,ITC Infotech, and HCL have their doors open to non-engineers. Wipro, the first to hire non-engineers about five years ago, is also increasing its intake of non-engineers.

Many companies have now started differentiating the job of a software engineer into several roles like testing, technical support, and even coding and programming that can easily be performed by non-engineers.

For example, TCS announced hiring of science and commerce graduates from this year, ITC Infotech says 20 percent of its tech hires will be non-engineers, and Wipro will have about 35-40 percent of the new hires from the non-engineering stream.

Selection is based on academic excellence; logical, quantitative, and verbal skills; and direct interviews.

  1. In my opinion all these companies must consider drop-outs also. There are many people who doesn’t have formal education because of personal reasons who are excellent in some technology. They are still struck with small companies just because of ‘certificate’ reasons. Due to experience in smaller companies, they might not good communication skills but let companies do some work-oriented interviews for the selection.

Our Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell etc. were college drop outs.

  2. Thats a very good suggestion praveen. Lots of people with excellent skills in IT / technologies but they dont have a so called certificates. what the big certificates holders are doing? they are just doing nothing but demanding more salaries and jump from one company to other.

There is a crisis for the talents in IT companies. so for resolving that, we should consider the non engineering workforce, who is good in the technologies. even we can hire them and train them.

this is the time of realization..

  3. Well, I cannot understand the logic of B-Tech, MCA yardsticks as the criteria for IT jobs. I have seen many BSc, Bcom and BA graduates thoroughly shining in IT sector mainly in mid-size companies.Whoever who has a likeness towards programming, creativity and open to learn new technologies will undoubtedly excel in IT sector. Our prestigious Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC is open to all graduates. They look for talents rather than mere degrees. Similarly IT companies should keep their doors open for talents rather than professional degrees.

  4. exactly! the IT companies should open their doors to the people competent in the IT field, not in terms of the degrees they hold.

  5. Is there any scope for personnel taking retirement from government jobs and still not willing to stay home. I have a case where a person took voluntary retirement from Airforce. By profession now he is a counseller, an english scholar and provides motivational classes in colleges. He likes speaking in public and interacting with fresh minds. Any relevent information will be helpful.
