Kerala e-governance project boosting local self government

Information Kerala Mission (IKM), the flagship e-governance project of the state government that works towards strengthening computerisation and networking of the 1,223 local bodies in the state, is billed as the largest and most comprehensive local bodies project in India.

M.K. Prasad, executive chairman and director of IKM, said at a media seminar here Tuesday that each of the local bodies in the state has its own web site with local level statistics, maps and other aspects of demography.

“This includes more than a lakh pages of information, 50,000 pages of documents on decentralization and local governance, besides a data base of nearly one gigabyte of documents and images with both English and Malayalam interfaces,” said Prasad.

IKM in recent times has developed many tools and solutions to strengthen the e-governance programme and includes products like the electronically driven civil registration of births, deaths and marriages.

Another product that is now popular in the local bodies is Soochika – which is a workflow based office management system including file tracking.

They have an accounting suite that is now operational in all urban local bodies besides an encyclopaedic repository of government documents for reference and archival use.

“IKM has always taken a people centric approach, placing the citizen at the centre of all its schemes that has paid rich dividends empowering local bodies,” added Prasad.

Besides these, IKM is now going ahead with the task of a Geo Spatial Data Management System for Local Planning and they have now prepared the digital version of cadastral based administrative maps for 818 local government, excluding forest areas in the state.
