Light a Candle, Let Cyber Freedom Thrive

aaronTechnoparkToday.com>> January 11, 2013:  Today marks a year since the tech world bid farewell to one of the most significant advocates of cyber freedom, Aaron Swartz. The 26-year-old took his life after legal scuffles with the department of justice for an alleged case of making accumulated scientific research data public.

But did he commit a grave sin to have to pay for it with his life? Never, all he wanted was to make publically available information that was valuable to the public. Aaron was an ardent cyber security enthusiast who wanted the internet to be a tool for public information exchange rather than a private storehouse of knowledge meant for the good of public.

As a symbol of remembrance of Aaron Swartz and his vision of open access, Technogeeks, a community of techies supporting internet liberalization, is organizing a candle light vigil online.  Supporters can light the virtual candle in the website and it will last for 48 hours.  The candle becomes smaller as time passes.  This campaign will come to an end if there is no one lights the candle.

Aaron helped create RSS 1.0; contributed to Creative Commons; was an early builder of Reddit, created the web.py framework.  Aaron fought for Open web. His Demand Progress project helped stop SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act in the US, which threatened to have far reaching unintended consequences. Aaron committed suicide on January 11, 2013.

Technoparktoday.com joins this campaign for cyber freedom.
