Infosys female Project Managers blamed

Lots of discussions happened here, as part of different posts – Why Technopark Managers(keralites) are not professional/inhumane?. Still it is not clear whether its a truth or that’s how they appear in front of employees. But this time it looks like a serious concern. Here is a farewell letter from a frustrated  Infosys employee. we masked some fields to protect the identity.

From: XXXXXX. XXXXX[mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 11:50 AM

Subject: GOODBYE, INFOSYS!!

Bcc: Intentional

CC: Not at all coincidental

Hello,

“There are always two sides to a coin.”

This is one statement that I had used for every essay of mine during my school days. During those days, I used this sentence, or rather; phrase in order to put forth my views for and against the essay topic. On this day, when I’ve taken the decision to quit Infosys Technologies Ltd., I feel that this fits in quite perfectly as the first line of my “elaborate” farewell mail.

I still wonder why Infosys scrapped the interview from its placement process for a single calendar year. Had the interview been there, I feel that I might not have been selected as one among the 60-odd final year engineering students at College of Engineering, Trivandrum on that fateful day in August, 2003. The journey at Infosys began a year later and it has been quite an eventful tenure spanning 4 years and 7 months. Let me stick by my subject line and describe my life at Infosys.

I have never felt so disheartened and helpless during my entire lifetime, as I’ve felt during my stint at Infosys, Trivandrum. I’ve had the opportunity to work with two inhuman, mean, self-centered ladies, who were designated as my project managers, here at God’s own country. The dastardly acts of one of them in PE, Trivandrum do not even deserve a mention in this mail. The other lady in IVS, Trivandrum made me understand the “Use and throw” rule, a term coined by one of my best friends after joining this company, in Trinfy. This lady considers herself as a dictator and the omnipotent, and treats the people unfortunately destined to work with her as her slaves. I would never forget the mail I received from this lady, my manager, informing me about my release from the project. The mail I received from that moron on the 29th Oct, 2008 read: “Since the transition is complete, I am releasing you from the project with effect of 23rd Oct 2008”. I literally cried at this despicable gesture from the manager of my project, into which I had put my heart and soul for almost a year and a half. I’ve stood aside, watched and admired my friends, who joined this company around the same time I joined, climb up the ladder here at Trinfy. I’ve been left wondering many a time how they feel a sense of pride and satisfaction from the work they do at this dungeon. Slowly, but surely, I understood the fact that their managers were human and always considered their team members as human beings rather than mere resources.

I did raise my concerns to higher authorities and they conveyed to me a loud and clear message or, rather, rule here in Infosys Trivandrum that the “Manager is and will be always right, and will never act inappropriately”. HEAR, true to its name, heard me but did nothing.

Now, I badly need to pen down a few lines about the other side of the coinJ. I would not have stayed alive today after spending all these years at this place, without my wonderful friends here: some were my friends even before joining this firm and the others joined the list during my stint here. It was the Infosys Football League, conducted here in Trinfy, which showed me that I can play at least one sport decently. I found a new area, where I could excel – Sports Quizzes!! The Bulletin Board was one space where I could express my views on varied topics with a tinge of humour. Frankly, I haven’t missed a single post in the BB.

I would never forget the love and affection given by entire project team in Infosys, Bangalore during the most devastating period of my life, when my father passed away in Feb 2006. I must mention here that the entire team management at Bangalore supported me during this period and ensured that my transfer to Trivandrum worked out without any delay. I thank each one from the bottom of my heart for being with me at that critical juncture.

I can’t use the disclaimer: No offence meant to anyone. I needed to express my feelings somewhere. I chose this occasion to do the same.

I deeply regret and repent my decision to join Infosys, despite repeated advices by my father to pursue higher studies. Sorry, Dad.

The road ahead might be difficult. But…

Thanks,

XXXXXX.

  1. Very true, and thanks for revealing these bitter truth. We know the managers you mentioned.seriously they have to attend some courses on how to manage and handle human beings.

Hope this post will be an eye opener to higher managers.

  2. This shows what is happening in companies like infosys. the irresponsible female managers are always making problems everywhere. they don’t know how to treat people, and how to motivate them to get the goals in a corporate world.

There are only a few female managers or leaders exceptionally made the difference in the world. and all the others were utter failure and they always creating unwanted troubles.

because females are not meant for leading anything. their natural instincts like jealous, weakness and fear will always with them. and that is the psychology and that’s how the world works.

There is no wonder, why the female managers acted so. for the No.1 reason they are Females and No.2 Reason is they are from kerala. they don’t know the meaning of being a good professional in today’s corporate world, especially in a technology company like Infosys.

Hope the management who is reading this can understand the pain of the people who is working under such managers.

  3. It wont change, because female managers needs less money and they wont leave company like male managers. but what we can do with their stupidity?

  4. This is the same story I have to say. the female managers are good for nothing. they are becoming managers by the influences in the senior managers or their relatives. and we can’t find any other qualities in them to lead a team or a motivator. They have always a thousand things in their mind like family and kids and they are showing that anger to the team mates.

and the 2 managers mentioned in this letter is just like that.and the story is not different in with the female managers in other companies.

  5. Shame to Infosys. Please don’t let the malayali managers to spoil the work culture of this great company. I remember an incident a few months back, where a manager has given the promotion to his wife, who is woking in infy trivandrum. employees complained to the higher management, and they found some foul plays, and took some actions against that manager and his wife.

All these shows, we are spoling the systems and using it for the personal gains instead of the growth of the company and people working in the projects.

It is a regular complaint that, some managers are so selfish, that they need all the credits. but remember, a manager is good as his team members.

hope this issue will be addressed by the concerned authorities soon.

  6. so bad for a company like infy

  7. There are some such despicable rare species (female PMs), who think their subordinates are slaves in the largest company in Technopark also.

  8. This is a common problem everywhere. management can’t find them until and unless the employees can complain against such PMs.

Do you think any female PM’s are better than their male counterpart?

  9. Infosys is the best company in trivandrum. but it is very dad to see such news from infy. infosys is famous for the process and people working together in harmony.

  10. we are still agreeing that INFOSYS is the best company in Technopark. But such incidents will reduce the credibility in a good company like infosys.

Localization spoils everything. Malayalees are infamous for the internal politics, and one mallu don’t like other mallu. This can be seen everywhere even if it is in gulf or in any other places. they are making all tha paarakal each other.

This is the attitude of malayali people. we need to become more professional.

  11. It is not correct to term this as a fmale manager issue or Malayalee issue. There are lots of great female managers and there equally great Malayalee managers in the world. We should deal with each probelm on its merits, and not just generalise and attribute to gender or regions.

This particular manager might have a problems which needs to be addressed. I am sure, Infosys has forums to take up and address the grievances of employees and that is wehere this should have been discussed. Employees can also approach higher ups to express their views and issues than taking this up in public forums.

  12. Manu, It can happen ,and influences can be there if you are working in a very regional environments. That is why the corporates are trying to mixing up people from different places to make a mixed up work culture, and i can’t understand for why Infy is promoting mallu people more in tvm ( home and native excuses?).

Talents and skills doesn’t have any gender, but there is some facts, which we should consider about. crisis management, people management and corporate management are different. if you can’t please your team mate, and if you can’t give him the credits of his works you will be a failure as a manager. and this is what I can find in many female managers especially from kerala. This is according to my experiences for the past one decade in the IT industry. Mallus or keralites are less professional, when it comes in to the work environment. politics ( that is everywhere) and personal attacks and revenges ruins the entire corporate, and the only solution is to be more professional, and seperate your personal life from professional life. if you have worry about your family, kid or whatever it is, better to not involved in responsible positions in office.

  13. Infosys is the best company in India. and please don’t spoil that name with un-professional people.

Infy is well known for its matured processes and transparency in management. That is why they are in the top of the world class companies.

  14. >> JK: Mallus or keralites are less professional

I wonder how come Kerala got India’s biggest IT park. Did you mean, it is because only less people (< 20%?) from kerala works in Technopark?

I may not support female managers in IT industry, but surely support Male Managers. There are many role models.

Behaviour of 1-2 Managers may be bad. But it does not mean all mallus are alike.

  15. The situation is not only with Malayalee female managers. Even north indian female managers also treat their team members as slaves. This is the case in the largest software company in Technopark.

  16. Moral of the story: whatever it is, female managers are not good as male managers.

  17. Female managers are just rubber stamps of management. they are the scapegoats and they don’t have any ability to take a decision by own.

So please don’t work under such rotten female managers.

  18. priya parameswaran

This is not a good attitude. there are good and bad managers.

  19. What i told is from my experience. I didn’t find any good female managers in my lifetime

  20. priya parameswaran

You are speaking from your experience, but that is far from the truth, you know?

  21. And what about this post, and this person’s experience? and ask anyone from technopark, about any female managers. i dont think you can hear a good feedback

  22. priya parameswaran

I’m working in the same infosys( but not in tvm) and you ask any of the infosys employee or ex-employees you can hear good comments about them.

  23. may be a technopark syndrome.:)

  24. priya parameswaran

That I don’t know. but wherever in this world, infosys has strict guidelines and standards. and technopark infy is not an exception

  25. “Since the transition is complete, I am releasing you from the project with effect of 23rd Oct 2008”. I literally cried at this despicable gesture from the manager of my project, into which I had put my heart and soul for almost a year and a half. ”

I really dont understand what is wrong in this.

Do you mean to say resources cant be released from projects.

what is this hue and cry for?

  26. If someone did good work, it is the responsibility of the manager to appreciate him, and explain the situations like a transition. it is applicable to the poor performers also.

Assigning in to project and releasing in a fine morning is not good. employees are human beings with blood and feelings. just give a word to them before the transitions from a project where they spend lots of their efforts.

It is a common practice in IT that if a project went to success, its the ability of the manager, and if the project flops, it is all about the inability of the team members, or the juniors in the team.

This is not good. as a team the responsibility and the credits should be shared among the team. its the achievement of the entire team, not the individuals.

  28. IT made so many millionaires. and it is still a promising place to do miracles. anyone can become by an idea in IT. if you are smart you can also become a millionaire, like me.

  29. kiran,
can i know the source of the millionaire list?

  30. Reading these posts, it looks like we mallus don’t like to work under female managers. Men can’t accept a woman for a boss. We are pathetic! Our IT guys, who I thought were progressive, are still living in the 19th century. Well, these guys won’t have a problem working under a female in UK or US. Only in Kerala they have a problem.

  31. In gereral there are no good female managers. that is a fact and accept that. Do you think Indra Nooyi is a good manager..lol..Give me a break…. 🙂

  32. Hai

dear be optimistic.Actually your problem touches me deeply.Because
    i had Experience.

This is the Common Problem in Indian IT Companies, especially Indian Service Oriented Companies.for them profit is the god. They usually do not care for human beings.many of the kerala managers are behave like as written in the mail.in many technopark companies, getting a manager post is not a difficult one even for a non techncal person.a person with experience more than 5 years can easily become a manager.

worst case:in a leading company in technopark, one manager had a experience in Cement production company

after a undeserved man/woman becoming a manager ,the Game starts

1.The Person had fear on everbody
    2.Never allow others to grow
3.Never recognize the Efforts of others
4.Never publish the Efforts of other to clients
    5.Never have a Positive outlook

    Solution
how to handle Your bakara managers

    1.Never do a work honestly

2.If you are a developer, always put a Loop hole in the coding, that others will remember

3.give maximum publicity through out the company

4,if ur manager is a lady, things will more easy

5.Instead of complain, you can play a Group game, then Things will start change

6.Never allow the managers to dictate on u,If dictate, destroy them

Conclusion:Highly Technically oriented manager will not do This type of Cruel things

writer is the Ex-Employee in Technopark

Now Senior soultion Architect in largest software company in the world.

  33. good manoj, this is actual scenario in many of the technopark companies.

some managers are Very Good also

I think the following rule should implement for the management positions

1.Person must have Very Good Experience in Information Technology

2.It is not some person with Good communication skills or Personality should easily get this post, because she/he did know the real pain of engineers

3.a association should be made against the activities of cruel managers in technopark

  34. infy female managers are the worst of its kind.

  35. I swear all emloyees feels Mangers are good for nothing
All Mangers feel seniour mangers are good for everything
All female managers feel, with out them nothing will happen
All mallus feels i will never be wrong.

  37. “The mail I received from that moron on the 29th Oct, 2008 read: “Since the transition is complete, I am releasing you from the project with effect of 23rd Oct 2008”. I literally cried at this despicable gesture from the manager of my project, into which I had put my heart and soul for almost a year and a half. ”

Its just an attitude issue of XXXXXX. There is nothing wrong with Female Managers.

    To whomsoever it may concern.

It is important to understand the following reasons

1.She must have been instructed by her senior to do so because all female managers are dumb and cant take any decisions on their own. They are called as Rubber Stamps in most of the IT companies.

2.Your continuance in the project may have been possible because financially the project may have taken a hit.So the immediate decision

3.Transition is a stage where it signifies the end of project. So what can your manager do if the project has to end.Probably it is a decision by the client and not hers to end the project.

4.Your manager did not like your performance and they probably just wanted to retain the best resources

Yes, As a matter of ethics she should have explained to you clearly
    the reason for your release.

BTW I was asked to return to my home from the Airport when I was flying out of India for my first International Assignment by my manager and no reason was given.I was a junior resource at that time and just went back home with tears in my eyes. Now thats called attitude.Good Luck

this attitude is called boot licking

  40. Interesting. ….Don’t miss last 2 Questions…
Some, rather most organizations reject his CV today because he has changed jobs frequently (10 in 14 years). My friend, the job hopper (referred here as Mr. JH), does not mind it. well he does not need to mind it at all. Having worked full-time with 10 employer companies in just 14 years gives Mr. JH the relaxing edge that most of the company loyal employees are struggling for today. Today, Mr. JH too is laid off like some other 14-15 year experienced guys the difference being the latter have just worked in 2-3 organizations in the same number of years. Here are the excerpts of an interview with Mr. JH:
Q: Why have you changed 10 jobs in 14 years?
A: To get financially sound and stable before getting laid off the second time.
Q: So you knew you would be laid off in the year 2009?
A: Well I was laid off first in the year 2002 due to the first global economic slowdown. I had not got a full-time job before January 2003 when the economy started looking up; so I had struggled for almost a year without job and with compromises.
Q: Which number of job was that?
A: That was my third job.
Q: So from Jan 2003 to Jan 2009, in 6 years, you have changed 8 jobs to make the count as 10 jobs in 14 years?
A: I had no other option. In my first 8 years of professional life, I had worked only for 2 organizations thinking that jobs are deserved after lot of hard work and one should stay with an employer company to justify the saying employer loyalty. But I was an idiot.
Q: Why do you say so?
A: My salary in the first 8 years went up only marginally. I could not save enough and also, I had thought that I had a permanent job, so I need not worry about what will I do if I lose my job. I could never imagine losing a job because of economic slowdown and not because of my performance. That was January 2002.
Q: Can you brief on what happened between January 2003 and 2009.
A: Well, I had learnt my lessons of being company loyal and not money earning and saving loyal. But then you can save enough only when you earn enough. So I shifted my loyalty towards money making and saving I changed 8 jobs in 6 years assuring all my interviewers about my stability.
Q: So you lied to your interviewers; you had already planned to change the job for which you were being interviewed on a particular day?
A: Yes, you can change jobs only when the market is up and companies are hiring. You tell me can I get a job now because of the slowdown? No. So one should change jobs for higher salaries only when the market is up because that is the only time when companies hire and can afford the expected salaries.
Q: What have you gained by doing such things?
A: That’s the question I was waiting for. In Jan 2003, I had a fixed salary (without variables) of say Rs. X p.a. In January 2009, my salary was 8X. So assuming my salary was Rs.3 lakh p.a. in Jan 2003, my last drawn salary in Jan 2009 was Rs.24 lakh p.a. (without variable). I never bothered about variable as I had no intention to stay for 1 year and go through the appraisal process to wait for the company to give me a hike.
Q: So you decided on your own hike?
A: Yes, in 2003, I could see the slowdown coming again in future like it had happened in 2001-02. Though I was not sure by when the next slowdown would come, I was pretty sure I wanted a debt-free life before being laid off again. So I planned my hike targets on a yearly basis without waiting for the year to complete.
Q: So are you debt-free now?
A: Yes, I earned so much by virtue of job changes for money and spent so little that today I have a loan free 2 BR flat (1200 sq.. feet) plus a loan free big car without bothering about any EMIs. I am laid off too but I do not complain at all. If I have laid off companies for money, it is OK if a company lays me off because of lack of money.
    Q: Who is complaining?
A: All those guys who are not getting a job to pay their EMIs off are complaining. They had made fun of me saying I am a job hopper and do not have any company loyalty. Now I ask them what they gained by their company loyalty; they too are laid off like me and pass comments to me why will you bother about us, you are already debt-free. They were still in the bracket of 12-14 lakh p.a. when they were laid off.
Q: What is your advice to professionals?
A: Like Narayan Murthy had said love your job and not your company because you never know when your company will stop loving you. In the same lines, love yourself and your family needs more than the company’s needs. Companies can keep coming and going; family will always remain the same. Make money for yourself first and simultaneously make money for the company, not the other way around.
Q: What is your biggest pain point with companies?
A: When a company does well, its CEO etc. will address the entire company saying, well done guys, it is YOUR company, keep up the hard work, I am with you. But when the slowdown happens and the company does not do so well, the same CEO Etc will say, It is MY company and to save the company, I have to take tough decisions including asking people to go. So think about your financial stability first; when you get laid off, your kids will complain to you and not your boss.

  41. @vik
    Interesting. Thoughtful.

  42. hi all,
any organisation needs transparency which is missing at INFY as mentioned by Nandan, the great. Nandan is the chief architect for INFY because he is the face for INFY at abroad to get projects and feed all INFOSCIONS. When he himself pointed out after 30 years of work experience in it, one should realise the intensity.
Regarding process, every company follows processes and systems but with transparency. How HP, IBM, HCL, ORACLE,SAP are functioning without noise. Infact they are the inventors of several operating systems and databases which total world is using at present.
Anyone claiming that he/she is the IT face of India should think once atleast about the Indians inventing in Microsoft and working at NASA without illiterate marketing for their business. Infosys is doing retailig business with Indian minds by using the languages found by the above said companies. That’s it. Has Infy invented any product? or any language? No. Never it spends on Research. Because it needs only money.
When it sacked 2500 employees, it should genuinely accept that the projects basket is getting emptied ; instead Infy has thrown the blame on employees that they are non-performers!! How far it is good for an organisation which says that it is driven by values!! Where are values towards these 2500 families who spent time and energies to develop INFY business and INFY directors’ families and their assets??
What are the directors thinking about Indian talent? No director is a computer graduate there! they are non-computer graduates!!
They get free marketing in TIMES OF INDIA based on Brahmin community advantage. They are misleading Brahmins by using their talent for their own property.
Directors should note that every parent around the world is proud of their children. Think once how much Bill Gates mother feels great for giving birth to him before praising your own children unnecessarily.
Think twice about the employees who come to work for you with lesser salaries to drive your business and be responsible to them while blaming and throwing unnecessary shit on them for the fault in your administration.
Accept the fact genuinely that your business is depleting!! Don’t use Brahmins for your advantage in business. Leaders should never use any line of division among people to improve their own lives!!!
    All readers,
Please think once about the money INFY has earned with us and not about whether female and male. Question the administration in media so that any other person do not exploit you and fellow workers. Managers want to stick to their positions driving technical people out so that they can earn crores with in 30 years of their life time. Assess them. Make them fear of expoliting you and your career. Start rebelling and get justice!!

  43. sir,
Please give the e mail id’s for Koratty IT park Companies

  44. Hello,

I completely agree with the fact that managers in IT companies are usually not professional enough. They need to be taught some business etiquettes.
Firstly, they are usually bad at communication skills. The mails sent out to the team usually either sound very casual or they sound as if a school principal is ordering his students to do something. They do not even realise (or probably do not know only) that there is a particular way to write mails where without being rude or too casual, you can convey the right message.

Secondly, when it comes to speaking in team meetings and discussions, these managers sound so senseless. The managers should be the kinds that when they speak, the audience automatically is quiet cos they want to listen to their manager speak. Usually the case is that the audience feels like geting up and running away rather than hear their manager speak. They are usually not good orators. So basically, IT managers lack soft skills.
Also, when these managers interact with the client, they do not know the exact things to talk. They would usually not even bother to know that if the client is from a particular nationality, he would prefer to be called say by his last name. They would not know that these things are noticed by the clients and if taken care of, can impress a client. I strongly feel that these IT guys should be involved only when it comes to technical stuff. For rest of the client management, the companies better have a person who has good communication skills overall.
And about the plight of the person from Infosys who had another unprofessional manager, i can oly say that again there is a way to convey a harsh message too. She could have of course discussed things with the person first. She probably didnt know that a healthy communication between a manager and the team is a must and always helps. The company should make the employee feel that he is also a part of the company’s growth and only then can they expect 100% efficiency from its employees.

Lots more to write on this topic..Hope these IT firms start taking efforts to polish their managers on these fronts.

  45. I felt very bad of this issue. For everyone’s info I am also one of the victim of Infy HR and managers.I have spend almost two years of my life in infy and finally everyone forced me to resign after a long torture.I did only one mistake “I asked for a transfer to husband’s location after when I became pregnant”.Can you blelive !!.I would like mention the word used by HR “Don’t act over smart infront of me”.

Such a horrible situation I faced .I have send many mails to them ,They made me run behaind them for about 6 months

  46. I dont agree with this one sideded emotional letter. I have not worked with Infosys…

For me, I have worked with 3 companies, bigger/equal to Infosys..
I have worked under Men and Woman..and watched Men and Women from close distance as PMs…This is happening in all companies with Men and Women. Only reason is they are not grown enough…thats all..its there every where….you cant help it…

Only thing writer can do is, do it differently, when you become manager…

Specially very highly talented guy/gal working under a medicore manager(who is just another manager) can air these comments at any time…Because there is no grooming in that relationship…!!!

But you learned a good lesson….So you dont repeat this atleast…
So those BAD people are good for your growth…!!!

  47. grow up
    !!!!

everybody has a bad boss. if you didnt go up the ladder yits yiour fault. its just not hard work that gets you there, you have be cut throat. and learn to please people too. and its sad that you chose to publically humilate yourself by saying you couldnt last a bad boss.

you sound like a petty girl who cant keep emotions out of your job, just like your boss.

even i am a girl dealing with a crappy boss. doesnt make a big show of it. some of the bosses i have who happened to be mallu and women where excellent. so stop judging and being general. i owe everythign t my lady boss. she was hard but to the point. no hugs or kissses but i learnt alot from her. she didnt sppon feed me but pusehed me to work. she used to abuse me but i still learnt from her more than i have from any good sweet talking boss.

  48. yes, she is very much right. I totally accept for this.
Only thing I observed here is local and global thinking. If you r thinking about ur chair and ur boss only, every thing seems to be alright fr any one. If u observe globally by widenining ur mind’s eye then the organisation’s behaviour towards everyone can be seen. If one is compromising with values, then every thing will be fine at any time. If not problem arises. just try to think of other families while thinking of yours.
don’t worry?!! share value does not go down. This is a forum to discuss the happenings and not to evaluate who is right?
so we should keep both ears open and have open mind to receive anything and try to take measures in future for improvement.
but first we should try to accept that fault occured; mistake happened.
everyone does not have guts to accept and change. Instead few throw the blame on opposite side.
all the best!! try to be good to others; automatically good happens to yo; else lot of hidden enemies and obstruction for growth.

  49. A manager has two kinds of power, soft power and hard power. Soft power comes from being a good, sensitive person capable of understanding the conflicting demands of management, employees, work and being able to resolve with least possible pain to the parties involved. Hard power comes from the position and the designation one holds.

Good managers only use the soft power because hard power has consequences. It introduces negativities into the team. The problem as mentioned in the mail happens when those who use hard power are elevated to management positions. It is the weakness of the system that elevate them rather than a problem with woman managers. It will happen irrespective of gender.
