TechnoparkToday.com>> May 10, 2013:  Beloved mother, friend, and professor, Nalini Ambady has to find a South Asian bone marrow donor as soon as possible to save her life.

Fifty-four-year-old Nalini had fought away leukemia eight years ago, but it relapsed in November. It was when her efforts to find a suitable donor from the US national marrow donor program failed, that her family and friends decided to launch the drive across the country six months ago. The US program has over 10 million donors.

As Nailini hails from Kochi, her relatives are hopeful of finding a donor from the state. They had earlier conducted a two-day camp at the Rama Varma Club in Kochi from April 19. The response was huge with 470 persons turning up. Their samples have been sent to the US.

A similar camp for donors (18-45 years) will be held on Sat, 11 May (Tomorrow) at Trivandrum Club from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Details

  • Venue & Time : Trivandrum Club. Sat 11 May.10:30 am to 4pm. Guide at the club will direct donor volunteers to the specific room where the event is taking place.
  •  Volunteers : Donor volunteers between 18 and 45 years are welcome – the more the better.
  •  Procedure Time: A donor volunteer will be directed from Table 1 to Table 6. At each the table there will be organizers to help the donor. Donors will be briefed and documentation carried out. At three tables, donors will be given a kit each to take two swabs, one from their right inner cheek and one from the left inner cheek. Thereafter with documentation complete, the donor is free to go. The entire process for each donor will generally take 45 mins.
  • Subsequent Action: The swabs will be sent to a central lab where matching with Nalini’s stem cell will be done. This will take about 4-5 weeks. Matching donors will be informed and blood taken. Blood is taken from one arm and passed through a machine which will separate  the platelets required and the remaining blood will passed back into an artery in the other arm of the donor. Non-matching donors names will be recorded in a registry for future matching with the permission of the donor.
