By signing an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) has become the first bank in the State to be a registrar for the much talked about ‘Aaadhaar’ project . Under this agreement, SBT will bring a large number of customers and non-customers for the registration for Aadhaar number.
The agreement was signed by Santanu Mukherjee, General Manager (Planning & Development- SBT ) and Ashok Dalwai, Deputy Director General (UIDAI) in the presence of P. Pradeep Kumar, Managing Director, SBT.
The bank has over Rs 11.1 lakh no-frills accounts and has financed 82,000 self-help groups in Kerala. It plans to cover all allotted unbanked villages in Kerala under its financial inclusion plan before March 2011.
UID numbers are generated based on a unique combination of demographic and biometric features of every resident of the country. Since the biometric features (finger print, iris scan and photograph) of a person are unique, the UID number would be free of any sort of manipulation.
