Shortcuts to Performance Appraisal – (Go Appraisal -10)

emotional bankTechnoparkToday.com>>  Sumesh is an engineer working for an IT company for almost six years. His interpersonal relations in the work place and community are excellent. His value for human relations is at top priority. Sumesh gives all possible help and support to his colleagues at work place. Naturally, all his colleagues and senior officers have high regards for him. His Emotional Bank Account at the Office was a huge one. Sumesh completes all his projects on time. He was considered positively for the performance appraisal.

Rakesh is a very systematic Engineer working in IT Company. While he was returning after a late night cinema, he found a motorist soaked in blood on the high way road. The road was empty. Rakesh empathized himself, stopped his bike and took the bleeding victim in his hands and looked for a vehicle to take him to the nearest hospital. Most of the vehicles did not stop. At last, the victim was taken to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw.

The victim was saved. Police arrived at the Hospital and appreciated Rakesh on his timely act, saving the life of the youngster. The press and the channel reported the matter with appreciation and the news was spread. Rakesh’s organization was also highlighted by the media.

The next day, the CEO of IT Park arranged a meeting in the Campus and Rakesh was complimented. Fortunately, the victim whom Rakesh saved happened to be the son of one of his organization’s major clients. His Emotional Bank Account became bulky. He became a star. He was considered first in the appraisal too.

Emotional Bank Account: – All of us know what a financial bank account is.  We make a reserve of fund from deposits and withdraw whenever needed. An Emotional Bank Account is a metaphor that describes the amount of trust that has been built up in a relationship.  It is a feeling of safeness you have with another human being.

If I make an Emotional Bank Account with you through courtesy, kindness, honesty, commitments, I build a reserve. Your trust towards me increases, and I can call upon that trust whenever needed.  Though I make mistakes, it may get compensated through this reserve. When the trust account is high, communication is easier, instantaneous, and effective.

What is the most important point an employee has to keep a check during the time of appraisal: Am I an asset to the organization by offering support to the organization emotionally? If your answer is ‘yes’, you have every chance of getting promoted.

Valuable points:-

  1. You should have emotional bank accounts with the members of your organization.
  2. Your emotional bank accounts should support your team.
  3. Your emotional bank account should support your team leader/ manager.
  4. Some of your activities should boost the morale of the organization.
  5. Some of your activities should boost the morale of the clients.
