Technopark and beyond – An Update

Here is the latest update on the infrastructure development related to the proposed IT industry in Kerala.

Expansion of Technopark Phase III, Thiruvananthapuram 100 acres

Status: The land has already been acquired. SEZ approval obtained. Allotment of land to IT companies already under discussion. A 10 lakh sq ft building is being constructed by Technopark. The park was formally launched in September 2008. An investment of Rs 200 crores expected to be made by 2011. Bank loans tied up for about Rs 75 crore and remaining loans under consideration.

Technocity project at Thiruvananthapuram 450 acres

Status: About 100 acres acquired and under acquisition. SEZ approval obtained for 60 acres of land. NABARD has been approached for RIDF loan of Rs 90 crore. The investment in land acquisition is about Rs 400 crore. The investment in infrastructure and IT park building is expected to be around Rs 250 crore. Bank loans worth Rs 350 crore tied-up.

Technopark in Kollam 40 acres

Status: An amount of Rs 100 crore is proposed to be invested by Technopark for development of internal infrastructure and IT park building.

Infopark at Cherthala 65 acres

Status: SEZ approval and land possession obtained. The location is about less than half an hours drive from Ernakulam city. Expected investment in basic infrastructure and IT park is Rs 100 crore.

Infopark at Ambalappuzha, Alappuzha district 100 acres

Status: Eighty-two acres of land already in possession and 18 acres of land under acquisition. SEZ approval obtained. Work for initial land development expected to commence by middle 2009. The expected expenditure on infrastructure development and IT park building is Rs 200 crore.

IT Park at Koratti, Trichur 30 acres

Status: Land transferred. The location is about 15 km from the Kochi International Airport. The land includes buildings which can be converted into IT park buildings. Expected launch of the park with ready for allotment space is set for September 2009. Estimated expenditure for launching the IT park is said to be around Rs 20 crore.

Setting up of Cyber Park at Kozhikode 70 acres

Status: Land identified and acquisition under progress. Is expected to be completed by middle of 2010. The land acquisition is expected to cost Rs 50 crore. Additionally about Rs 200 crore is expected to invest for development of basic infrastructure and IT park building. The land should be available for allotment in 2011 and built-up space in 2012.

Expansion of Infopark, Kochi 150 acres

Status: The land is in advanced stage of acquisition, expected to cost about Rs 175 crore. A 5 lakh sq ft building and a multi-storey car park and a budget guest house, estimating at Rs 120 crore are presently under development in Infopark Phase I. NABARD RIDF fund for Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned and the remaining is from internal resources.

IT park at Thaliparambu, Kannur 30 acres

Status: Land in possession. SEZ approval obtained. Preliminary work started.

IT park at Kasargode 100 acres

Status: SEZ approval obtained. Work yet to start.

  1. The relative success of Technopark has prompted the government to initiate the new projects. But execution of crucial IT projects needs to be faster and one of the key imperatives for this is to have a stable and consistent leadership to see the projects through
