TechnoparkToday.com(June, 2015): ‘Latex Carry Backpack’ designed by Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirapally was adjudged the best project at the 10th National Innovation Contest – TechTop 2015 that concluded at the Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology (MBCET) today. The prize instituted by Degree Controls comprising a cash award of Rs.1 lakh was awarded to the winners by Hon’ble Governor of Kerala – Justice (Retd) P Sathasivam at the valedictory function. The second prize of Rs.50,000 was won by Greeshma Unnikrishnan of IIT Mumbai for her project ‘Cost Effective Monitoring System for Intravenous Infusion’, while the third prize of Rs.30,000 went to MBCET for their project ‘UPASANA: Diagnostic Toolkit for ASHA Workers.’
One of the highlights of TechTop this year was the Junior Innovation Challenge introduced for high school students. As many as eight projects were displayed at the exhibition. Of these Placid Vidya Vihar School of Kottayam won the top honors of a cash prize of Rs.25,000 for their project ‘Easy Patient Transferring Machine’. Students of St.Berchman’s Higher Secondary School, Changanacherry won the second and third prizes for their projects ‘Pulling Gas Trolley and Chalk Duster Accumulator’. They were awarded cash prize of Rs.15000 and Rs.10, 000 each.
Shri P Sathasivam at the valedictory function said, “Entrepreneurship and Innovation is key to t the economic growth of our country. Entrepreneurs and Enterprises not just help in the increase of per capita but also employment opportunities. Continuous Innovations and identifying key issues and finding effective solutions is also key for the growth of our country. Some of the projects demonstrated at TechTop by engineering students and school students are very innovative and tackle basic issues, which was very heartening to see. I wish TechTop a great future and I wish youngsters to utilize TechTop as an opportunity to showcase their innovative creations and set the ball rolling towards innovative entrepreneurship.”
Amal Jyothi College of Engineering students Ajin Omanakuttan, Alen Anil, Mintu Elizabeth Shaji and Parameswaran S has developed a product that they feel would be a great support for the plantation industry. The Latex Carry Backpack addresses a common issue rubber tappers face when they transfer the milk from the tree to the containers like spilling, rain, carrying the same through the uneven terrain. For this the students have developed an innovative carry shoulder backpack where the milk can be easily transferred to the bag through an arm without spilling and can be covered to protect from rain and can be easily carried through the uneven terrain of these plantations thus reducing their strain tremendously
Cost Effective Monitoring System for Intravenous Infusion, the project that won the second prize gives an alarm on completion of infusion of desired volume of fluid; chokes the tube and blocks further infusion of fluid and back flow of blood for a patient being given intravenous infusion in a hospital. The project was developed by MTech student of IIT Mumbai Greeshma Unnikrishnan.
The third prize winner – UPASANA: Diagnostic Toolkit for ASHA Workers is a device that will measure all the vital biomedical parameters using a single device. This will be a great help for ASHA workers who travel to rural locations to conduct regular medical diagnosis and also for the doctors at the primary health centre to get the accurate readings. The project was developed by Vivek Sureshkumar, Joji John Varghese and Arun Krishna of MBCET.
Consolation prizes of Rs. 20,000 each were given to Amal Jyothi college of Engineering, Kottayam for their project ‘Advance Hair Coloring Technology’ and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Kottayam for its project ‘Development of Cost-effective filter having anti-bacterial Property’. Sahrdaya College of Engineering & Technology, Thrissur won the all-women’s team award, which fetched prize money of Rs.20, 000 for the project ‘Bio-Refinery a solution for water pollution’.
As many as 21 innovative projects were exhibited at ‘TechTop-2015. Prof V K Damodaran, Jury Chairman of the contest said, “Judging the 21 projects was very challenging at the same time interesting for the jury. The best thing this year was that some of the projects on display have addressed daily life issues with very simple solutions aiming at Healthy living. The jury is particularly impressed by the projects exhibited by the school students at the Junior Innovation Challenge purely for their thought and innovation in addressing a common issue we face in our daily lives and developed solutions that are very sensible and simple.”
Shri P H Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary for IT and Industries presided over the valedictory function. His Excellency Most Rev.Dr.Samuel Mar Irenios Auxillary, Bishop of Trivandrum, also graced the function. MBCET Principal, Dr. T M George; TechTop Founder Rajesh M Nair; TechTop Charitable Trust Member N T Nair and TechTop Chief Coordinator Mr. Moossa C Kandy were also present at the valedictory function.
Govt should come with more such programs to encourage the youth. if so kerala would be the next place for new inventions.
