Trade unions to enter kerala IT Industry?

IT-trade-unionTechnoparkToday.com(Sept, 2014):  CPI(M) backed CITU recently announced their plan to form trade unions in IT sector. Senior CITU leader and former CPI-M member of the Rajya Sabha K. Chandran Pillai, after a meeting held on Saturday, said the time has now come for trade unions to be formed in the IT industry in Trivandrum.

“There have been demands for it and hence we discussed it. There have been reports of exploitation of employees in this sector,” said Mr Pillai while taking part in a TV debate.

IT sector is currently based in Kochi and Trivandrum and the industry which early this year crossed Rs.5,000 crore export turnover, employs more than a lakh directly and another three lakh indirectly. The announcement of a trade union in IT sector sparked many debated among the IT professionals, industry leaders and politicians.

Those who have been in the IT industry for years point out that in this sector there is little need of collective bargaining as the employees are well paid, given good facilities and generally not exploited. If an employee is dissatisfied he will always seek greener pastures. Every company strives to keep their employees happy and thereby keep their attrition rate low.

In their defence, trade union leaders have a different opinion to tell. “There have been demands for it and hence we discussed it. There have been reports of exploitation of employees in this sector,” said Senior CITU leader and former CPI-M member of the Rajya Sabha, K. Chandran Pillai.

Readers, What is your opinion about the introduction of trade unions in IT industry?  Do you think it can bring some positive changes or that would be a big disaster for the IT industry itself? please share your thoughts and opinions as comments below.

  1. IT is the only sector which is running smooth and fine without these parasites. and now they wanted to spoil this industry also. This is the only sector which will be functioning even in a harthal or bandh days. because the people are getting paid only for the job they do – more precisely the hours they worked. Private sector people are not covered under any of the govt schemes for the perks or pensions. they don’t have any other luxuries also. so please leave the iT alone, and there are thousands of other industries needed your help. please go and spoil them.

  2. trade unions are the curse for industries, especially in kerala. how many industries they closed? how many people became jobless? how many people migrated to other states with their industries? all because of some vested interests of people in trade unions. so say NO to trade unions in IT industry. please…………………

  3. If we allow this, we have to go to other places for getting an IT job. now at least keralites can live and work within kerala – Trivandrum, Cochin and Thrichur etc… do you people want us to go to channai, bangalore and delhi for getting IT job? please DON’T do stupid things. we don’t want any unions. and thanks for not interfering our job.

  4. Actually the trade union in IT industry is the need for the hour. Most of the IT companies exploiting the SEZ banner and utilizing it to loot employees without giving any benefits. No job security, no bonus, no statuary benefits, but hours and hours of without holidays even for public holidays. Even labor commission is unaware how to intervene into IT job/salary issues. So, we need a trade union, with the support of any major political parties who have enough strength and backbone to support IT people. I SUPPORT.

  5. Disagree with this decision , We don’t want any kind of political parties entering to the smooth running system . The Technopark management team can build an advisory board to solve the employee problems. Thats enough !

  6. First of all I do not want any party of any color in our campus. Secondly, this particularly party was against computers and this campus. Political parties (hope you remember Sasi Tharoor techie gimmicks at the time of elections) tried always to enter into the campus but simply they were not because they know zero about IT. Corporate politics is different from the local rotten politics and they know they need to fight with brains to compete.

Few silly weird exaggerated and perverted reasons I feel are:

    1. Unwanted political intervention in each and every matter and ultimately the decision will be biased and like in local politics, high court and Govt. will start commenting to “save” IT parks

    2. Strikes 😀

    3. Participation in outside hartals and strikes – more holidays means more LOPs

    4. Membership fee, participation in dharna, monthly and annual general body meetings

    5. Party leader gets good appraisals because management fears he will call a strike and shut down the company.

    6. Fate of HMT, Kochi will haunt IT parks

    7. Job Recommendations. A less profile person gets job by kicking out a high profile expert.

    8. Strict 10-5 time boxed job so the company itself will be jobless as most of the companies depend foreign customers and their time zone is different

    9. Bribe

    10. Strikes to retain a poor preferred employee because he is a good political performer

    11. Kannur style fights and murders. If one party enters, other parties will follow

    12. Talk talk talk and no work

    13. Party funds donation

Will more add after thinking 🙂

  7. I personally support forming an association to address issues like non-fixed time working, job insecurity, hire-fire without proper severance pay, lack of minimum wage, lack of social security, holding of certificates and forceful bonds etc. I do not know why we dont have an association till now, when from sweepers to Bank officers/teachers/doctors/engineers/pilots to IAS/IPS officers have their own union/association to speak for them

  8. No association or forum in the IT industry will not exist if it is without the back support of a major political party. We know that no one will raise sound if his or her fellow employee faces an issue from company management. If someone raise support for another, he will also be fired from his job. So, who will take the responsibility for forming a forum or association. I am sure, he will get black listed among the employees, from the management side. Most probably he will lose his job. If some strong political parties, it may be CPIM, BJP or Congress, support the movement, companies will not dare to make any illegal/threatening moves towards them.

I support the movement.. if it has enough strength and power to support me..!!!
