Two-Day Workshop on Free Mobile Platforms in Technopark

TechnoparkToday.com(March, 2014): In order to expose emerging free technological developments—particularly, Free/Open Mobile Platforms and localization tools—in the domain of mobile and tablet computing, International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) is organizing a two day workshop on “Free Mobile Platforms“ at Travancore Hall, Technopark during 11-12 March 2014.

The Workshop is being organized in association with Swathanthra Malayalam Computing (SMC), IEEE Kerala Section, CSI Trivandrum Chapter and the CSI Special Interest Group on FOSS (SIG-FOSS). The workshop also will showcase the work done by ICFOSS in the area of localization on Free Mobile Platforms.

After Android’s remarkable debut, there has been significant interest in completely free mobile and smart device platforms. A number of new projects, such as Mozilla’s Firefox OS, Linux foundation-backed Tizen, Ubuntu for Phones, and the Replicant Project, have emerged that demonstrate the potential for attaining critical mass. These new players have positioned themselves as viable alternatives to Android, reflecting the desire among manufacturers, operators, component-makers and most significantly, users, for platforms which are fully Free as compared to Android, particularly on account of increasing concerns on privacy around the world. This workshop attempts to expose participants to emerging Free Mobile Platforms like Ubuntu Mobile OS, Firefox OS and the Replicant Project.

“Localization, which is a key to wider and deeper uses mobile apps in local communities, has caught the interest of many developers and vendors as they seek to deepen their engagement with non-traditional markets.” said R. Srinivas, Project Manager, DIT Project, ICFOSS.

“ICFOSS has been working on localization, particularly, developing localization tools in Malayalam and other Indic languages, as part of the R & D Project of the Dept. of IT, Govt. of India. Besides showcasing localization tools, the Workshop will also introduce some of the upcoming mobile platforms in the Free Software domain, developer tools, and APIs with an emphasis on internationalization features for Indic languages.”, said Satish Babu, Director, ICFOSS.

The two-day workshop is directed at for programmers, application developers, and students. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
