Workshop on Debian Packaging on Dec 13, 2014 @DBG, Technopark (Saturday 2 PM)

Organized by GTech Technology Focus Group

debianTechnoparkToday.com>> If you have installed any app from google play store, you know how easy installation of new software has become.

Android being a single target for making these installations packages usually the developers of the applications themselves make these packages. But consider the large number of GNU/Linux distributions with each their own release cycle (different versions of libraries and applications) and packaging formats (rpm based and deb based distributions) you’ll understand the challenge in front of each software project.

To tackle this issue, each distribution takes care of packaging all applications for it. Debian is also no different. With web based software becoming widespread there is ever more need to package these applications.

Topics Covered
The workshop will cover basics of packaging in first part with vegas gem as an example and in the second part we will explore each one packaging a new ruby gem. The mode of the workshop will be hands on.

Each participant will work on packaging the chosen ruby gem using documentation. When a concept is not clear or needs more explanation, we will discuss those in detail. So we may cover creating patches using quilt, what are copyright licenses, debian release cycle, bug tracking system, bug priorities, gpg, git etc.

This is an advanced session and basic familiarity with command line is expected from the participants.
