Workshop on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Kochi

TechnoparkToday.com(July,2013) >> Srinivasa Ramanujan Institute for Basic Sciences, a capacity building initiative of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment (KSCSTE), has invited applications for a three-day workshop on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry (MS).

The workshop, aimed at exposing researchers in biology and chemistry to the latest developments in NMR Spectroscopy and MS, is being organised in association with Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre (STIC) of Cochin University of Science and Technology. Prof Dr Jacob Philip, Professor and Director, STIC is the course director of the workshop to be held from July 18 – 20 at STIC here.

The workshop will expose participants to not just the theoretical aspects – from fundamental to advanced levels – but also equip them practically through laboratory exposure.

Eminent experts from different parts of the country including Dr. KP Madhusoodanan, Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow; Prof. KV Ramanathan, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; Prof. S. Prathapan, CUSAT, Kochi; Dr C Baby, IIT Madras and Prof S. Sudarslal of Amrita University, Kollam will lead the lectures. Dr Shibu M Eappen and Mr Adarsh KJ, both from STIC, will handle the lab sessions.

With the development of powerful superconducting magnets, fast Fourier transform technique and computerization, NMR spectroscopy is now routinely used by chemists as well as biologists to solve the structures of molecules.  It has become one of the most powerful tools in chemistry and biology.

Mass spectrometry is another important analytical tool in biology and chemical research.  The recent developments in MS help one to determine the structures of even polymers and biopolymers with high resolution. MS coupled with chromatography is now an indispensible part of proteomics, metabolomics and genomics studies and is used in the analysis of extremely complex mixtures.

The number of participants for the workshop is limited to 30, on a first-come-first-served basis. Young faculty members of colleges, university departments and research scholars in chemistry/biology who use or propose to use NMR/MS in their research can apply.
